The Play-Offs

As of May 2017 …

Town have taken part in nine Play-Off campaigns and they currently hold several records where these are concerned, namely …

  • wins at three different venues – Old Wembley, Millennium Stadium (Cardiff) and New Wembley
  • they have also played at Old Trafford, losing to Peterborough United (May 2011)
  • Town have NEVER lost the first leg in any Play-Off campaign (9 games)
  • they have NEVER won a home leg in any Play-Off campaign (9 games)
  • they have been promoted from the bottom division to the very top via the Play-Offs; only Blackpool can match this
  • they are the only team ever to advance through all divisions via penalty shoot-outs in Play-Off Finals
  • Town have NEVER lost a penalty shoot-out at ANY stage of a Play-Off campaign
  • they are the ONLY team to have ever won a Play-Off Final penalty shoot-out after missing their first three penalties (vs Sheffield Utd, 2012)
  • Town have won SIX consecutive Play-Off Semi-Final/Final shoot-outs; no other team has managed more than ONE
  • every time that Town have finished on 81 points, they have been promoted through the Play-Offs: 2004, 2012 and 2017
  • Town are the only team EVER to be promoted with a negative goal difference (May 2017, -2GD)*
* Just to qualify this bizarre statistic, 23 of their 25 wins were by just a one-goal margin, but these were effectively wiped-out by 0-5, 0-4, 0-3, 1-3 and a few 0-2 defeats!
