Town win the FA Cup!

1922 COLOURISED Cup winnersOn this day, 29th April 1921, exactly one hundred years ago, Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup for the – so far – only time in its proud, illustrious history. An ill-tempered game against Preston North End greatly lamented by the FA for the number of fouls committed, was settled by a last minute penalty kick scored by Town’s legendary Billy Smith. By a strange twist of fate, Town had just beaten their opponents from over the Pennines 6-0 only the Saturday previous, so the entertainment value of this match came as quite a disappointment to the Town faithful although as ever on such occasions, the result was all that mattered. This Final was also the last to be played on a ground other than Wembley Stadium (until the recent modernisation of the stadium forced relocations) and played out at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in front of a meagre 53000 supporters.

Town had already competed and lost in the Final in 1920 against Aston Villa, and were to be runners-up yet again in 1928 against Blackburn Rovers, 1930 against Herbert Chapman’s Arsenal and again in 1938 when PNE gained their revenge 1-0, ironically by a penalty kick. Since then Town have sadly failed to trouble the statisticians where this competition is concerned.
